Hospice Care Week, 9th-15th October 2017

A national initiative to help raise the profile of hospice care across the UK

Hospice Care Week is an annual awareness-raising week of events and activities to help raise the profile of hospice care across the UK.

This year over 100 local hospices will be highlighting how hospice care can help change lives during the week of 9th - 15th October.

We’ve got some exciting events to tell you about during Hospice Care Week:

Don’t miss these key dates

On Monday 9th October Baroness Finlay will be opening The LOROS Professional Development Centre, which is a purpose built educational and research venue that will enable the LOROS Education team to deliver training programmes and the Research team to conduct research in palliative and end of life care.

Alt text On Thursday 12th October we’re hosting a free Bridal event at LOROS By Design Shop in Leicester’s Market Street, with hundreds of beautiful wedding dresses up for grabs. Brides-to-be will have the chance to pick up their perfect wedding dress at a bargain price, with hundreds of brand new and pre-loved gowns all priced under £200. With some of the dresses originally selling for the price of £2,000, this is the perfect opportunity for brides to literally say yes to the dress, for less.

On Friday 13th October join hundreds of others helping us celebrate and get involved in our annual LOROS Yellow Day. We’re calling on every business, school, shop and organisation in Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland to take part in a simultaneous non-uniform/dress down day. We want everyone to wear an item of YELLOW clothing or an accessory, a smile and bring a £1 donation. LOROS Local will be at the Clock Tower in Leicester so come on down and join us!

Alt text On Saturday 14th October we invite you to attend our open day at the Hospice under the banner of 'The Big Day Out', when we will celebrate LOROS, along with the best of what Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland have to offer. There will be food and drink, stalls selling local produce and handmade crafts, a raffle, tombola and activities for all the family, make this a fantastic day out for everybody.

On Saturday 14th October from 6-10pm, we will be celebrating Hospice Care Week by holding an event at the Shri Hindu Temple and Community Centre in Leicester. Alt text Find out about your local hospice services and join in with devotional prayers and singing, plus Garbas and Dandiya Raas. Music is by Sajan Celebrations and admission is FREE. On Sunday 15th October it’s the Leicester Marathon in Victoria Park, Leicester, with thousands of runners taking part to raise funds for LOROS Hospice. LOROS Local will be there as the VIP/Hospitality hub for LOROS runners along with Hospice staff and volunteers. If you’re not taking part, come along for the spectacle and support your local heroes. Happening throughout the week:

BBC Radio Leicester Breakfast show

The local BBC Breakfast show will be providing coverage during Hospice Care Week. Listen out for regular daily features, stories and updates on what’s happening where throughout the week.


Alt text Our mobile resource will be out and about in various locations, offering you the chance to find out more about what we do and promoting our events. There will be opportunities to experience our virtual reality goggles and enjoy some complementary therapy from our very own LOROS therapists.

Our shops will be getting in on the act with their window displays and posters inviting you to find out more. Why not come in and browse through the goodies on offer. School visits

Our Youth Engagement Officer will be visiting various primary and secondary schools during the week to raise awareness of the services offered by LOROS, as well as the impact that young people can have within their community. This will include talking about the opportunities they can be involved with following Hospice Care Week, including volunteering, work experience and Hospice School.
