Join #TeamLOROS and take on a four-day trek across the magnificent landscape of the world’s largest hot desert! On this once in a lifetime experience, you and a team of LOROS supporters will share an unforgettable experience discovering a landscape unlike any other, the Sahara Desert.
Spanning over 8 million square kilometres, the Sahara Desert covers as many as eleven countries in northern Africa. Despite it being one of the harshest environments on Earth, the Sahara is home to a variety of wildlife that has adapted to a life of extremes, including camels, goats, cheetah, gazelles, ostriches and more. During the summer months temperatures in the Sahara average a sizzling 38 – 46°C, thankfully our trek takes place in March 2022 making the most of the ‘cooler’ weather!
Trekking for four days, you and other LOROS supporters will cover more than 30km across some difficult desert terrain; including climbing to the top of the enormous Chigaga Dunes where you’ll get to see the breath-taking sunrise over the ever-changing landscape. Expect some tough days of trekking, and relaxing nights sleeping under a blanket of stars in the middle of nowhere.
From the moment you sign up, you’ll be supported every step of the way, with access to regular training walks and local traditional Berbers to guide you once you reach the Sahara.
Want to know more?
Register your interest at the bottom of this page to receive a brochure containing a full itinerary of the trip. You will also receive an invite to our FREE information evening on 25th February 2021, where you’ll be able to hear more about the event, ask any questions you may have, and meet others that may be joining you in March 2022.
If you would like to ensure your place now, you can book directly by clicking here - but don't forget to register for the open evening too!
There are two options available to you when you decide to sign-up:
Option A – Minimum Sponsorship
If you choose this option then there is an initial registration fee of £175, and then we ask you to pledge to raise a total of £1,874 in sponsorship for LOROS Hospice. LOROS will then cover the remaining cost of your trek out of the money that you raise.
Option B – Self-Funded
If you choose this option then there is an initial registration fee of £175, and then you cover the remaining £937 challenge costs yourself (payable 10 weeks before departure). You are then free to set whatever fundraising target you like, with 100% of that going to the Hospice.
What support can you expect from LOROS?
When you sign-up for a big trek like this, we won’t just leave you out in the cold. There’s a range of support on offer, from the moment you sign-up, right through to landing back in the UK.
All Sahara Desert Trek participants will have access to:
A fundraising pack full of amazing ways to get sponsorship
A Facebook group so you can meet the team, keep in touch and help each other with fundraising
Training walks organised by a LOROS Ambassador, which are a great opportunity to improve fitness and meet others
Help/advice from the LOROS fundraising team, who will be on hand to help you throughout. Whether its fundraising tips or simply borrowing some buckets or collection tins there are lots of different ways we can support you.
Flexible fundraising deadlines if you’re struggling to reach your target, with up to four months after you complete the challenge to collect in all your funds.
We are working really hard to make sure that all our LOROS events go ahead safely in 2021, giving you both the peace of mind that any necessary precautions relating to the pandemic have been taken as well as the confidence that you are protected if you are unable to take part due to COVID-19. Please note that practices may change as vaccines become more prevalent but for our Sahara Trek currently, this means:
We are planning really far ahead of time with this challenge falling in March 2022. We’re already seeing lots of people booking treks for 2021, and as the vaccine rolls out throughout 2021 we’re confident that this challenge can give you something to look forward to early in 2022.
We have been working with Global Adventures for a number of years now. Having had to deal with various threats to challenges in the past including natural disasters, volcanic ash clouds, credit crunches and Brexit, there is no one more experienced to help make this challenge a reality for you.
Global Challenges remain very transparent with their procedures which you can read about in their Travel with Confidence policy. From working closely with local providers to ensure hygiene processes, through to running transport with reduced capacity and providing hand sanitiser, they have risk assessed every element on this challenge to make sure it remains COVID-safe.
If you can no longer take part due to illness or tiered restrictions then you can transfer your registration fees and participation over to another challenge up to 8 weeks before the event.
If Global Adventures have to cancel the challenge due to COVID-19 then you will be eligible for a full refund of any money you have paid to Global for the challenge.
Global Adventures are also fully ATOL protected, so your money will also be protected in the unlikely event that the company ceases trading.
If times are tight then you can also avail yourself of flexible booking fees allowing you to spread the initial cost of your registration across two months.
