The care we provide
LOROS provides specialist palliative care to the population of Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland who are 18 and over with a terminal illness.
The inpatient ward
Some patients are admitted to help control difficult symptoms, for example pain, sickness or feeling very anxious or overwhelmed. Some patients come to the Hospice to be cared for at the end of their life, often because they have chosen that or because it has not been possible to be looked after at home. More than half of patients who come to the ward are discharged home.
There are clinics most days where patients can see a palliative medicine consultant or specialty registrar, a pain specialist consultant, a lymphedema specialist nurse, a complementary therapist or a counsellor.
LOROS provides day therapy for four days a week at the Hospice site. This allows a break for patients and their families and includes assessment and monitoring of symptoms, seeing occupational and physiotherapists, being involved with creative therapy and seeing doctors in a clinic. There is a focus on rehabilitation and psychological and social support. Patients attend weekly or fortnightly dependent on need and may be discharged if their needs are met or they remain very stable.
The Community Nurse Specialist and Home Visiting teams see patients at home, providing specialist advice and support and respite respectively. A small number of doctor home visits are offered when patients are too unwell to attend the outpatient clinic and have complex needs.
The home visiting service can provide patients and carers with a home visitor for a few hours a week to allow carers to leave home with peace of mind and spend time doing other things.
