These three climbers are set for a day of ups-and-downs as they attempt to scale the equivalent of the tallest building in the world in aid of the Leicester Mercury LOROS Appeal. Richard Kendall, Derek Carroll and Dave Ellis – together with Janet Freeman – are aiming to each climb 828 metres on the 11-metre climbing wall at the Tower Climbing Centre in Beaumont Leys. The figure is the height of the Burj Khalifa, in Dubai.
The fund-raisers are hoping to collect about £4,000 for the Leicester Mercury LOROS Appeal, which aims to raise funds for the new Willow Wing extension at the hospice.
Derek, of Birstall, has organised the climb in memory of his wife, who was cared for at the hospice before she died in 2001. The challenge will take place on August 10, the anniversary of his wife's death. They are hoping to complete the task in 10 hours.
Derek, 51, said: "I always wanted to pay back LOROS somehow. There was always someone there to see to her, no-one was ever too busy."
