A woman with motor neurone disease has written her memoirs to help raise funds for the LOROS hospice. Mother-of-two Louise Amor recalls her days at Our Lady's Convent School, in Loughborough, in the book Good Habits, Bad Habits: A Convent Education.
The 54-year-old, of Hathern, near Loughborough, was diagnosed with a slow-progressing form of motor neurone disease about 10 years ago and lost her speech five years ago.
She decided to write about her school days in the 60s and 70s to raise funds for LOROS, where she goes for respite care four or five times a year. More than 200 copies have now been sold, raising more than £1,000 for the hospice and meaning an extra batch is now going to be printed.
Speaking using a computer translator during a break at the Groby Road hospice, Louise said: "I do a lot of writing and I thought my school days might interest people. I finally put some focus into it about a year ago and thought it might raise money for LOROS. I write here because it is quiet. It wasn't hard because a lot is based on diaries. My illness helped, in a way, because I didn't have to work. I was thrilled when it was printed."
Louise, who lives with her husband, Paul, and teenage sons Richard and Henry, praised the care she has received since she started going to the hospice five years ago. "It's very peaceful and the staff are marvellous," she said. "It's respite for my family as well. LOROS helps me with physio and rest and emotional support. I was very reluctant to come at first but now it is like a second home. There's such a positive atmosphere and it really buoys me up. I'm very lucky."
School friend Rowena Gibbons, who works at the hospice, features in the book, but said she was not one of the naughty pupils. "I couldn't put the book down," she said. "It's so well written."
LOROS Matron Chris Faulkner said: "It is a true example of how the human spirit can achieve great things, even when illness imposes limitations on individuals. The ways in which our patients share their lives and experiences with us is always a privilege and an inspiration."
Good Habits, Bad Habits costs £5 and is available from the LOROS hospice and several LOROS shops. All proceeds go to LOROS.
