Musicians are hosting a gig to raise funds for LOROS in tribute to a guitarist who died at the hospice. Ian Jones spent his last days at LOROS in August after battling lung disease for several years. He died aged 49.
Ian, who lived in the city centre, was involved in several bands during a music career spanning more than 30 years. In 1980, he co-founded hard rock band Blitzkrieg - whose self-titled single was covered by Metallica - and went on to play with the Findley Webster band in 2000. The band, fronted by lead singer Findley, is reforming to play at The Musician in his memory. Findley, of Great Oxendon, near Market Harborough, said: "I met Ian in 2000 and we worked together for about five years. We had lost contact since he had moved due to ill health, but he found my number and six months before his death, he called me. Ian was a rock ‘n' roll child. He never lost his fabulous wit and encouraged me to continue on my journey with music, so it seems fitting to do this gig in his honour and revisit some of the great songs we wrote. When people heard he'd died, a lot of people got the album back out and thought a gig would be a good idea. We decided to do a one-off as a tribute to Ian. I asked his family what charity he would have wanted to help, and they said LOROS."
Findley and the band - Tom Wright, Nathan Rainer, Jo Martin and Jeanette Parker - hope to raise about £1,700 from the gig, on Friday, March 19. They are also holding an auction of signed music memorabilia on the night to raise funds.
Ian's mum, Doreen, of Mowmacre Hill, Leicester, said it was the perfect tribute to him. "I'm so proud that they're thinking of him and raising money for LOROS," she said. "Music was his life - he was married to his guitar. At his funeral we played Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll, that's what he wanted. I'll go to the gig. It will be emotional, but I want to go."
