Christina's story - Hospice Care Week

Patient Stories

10 Oct 2022

Christina Hollingsworth has secondary breast cancer. She was offered LOROS Day Therapy by her palliative care nurse but avoided it as she didn’t want to think about her cancer. Finally she attended, and didn’t regret it. Here’s another story celebrating our LOROS community for #HospiceCareWeek

Christina:

“So I came to Day Therapy and it was such a relief. It’s somewhere you can be completely honest. It’s the only place where people understand exactly what you’re going through. You tell people you have incurable cancer in the outside world and they say, ‘well yes I’ve got a bad back, I know what it must be like.’ Obviously they don’t at all. But at Day Therapy we’re all in the same boat.

I came to Day Therapy and it was such a relief. It’s the only place where people understand exactly what you’re going through.

Anything you need, even things you didn’t know that you need, you can have, like a foot massage. You don’t need to explain anything, they just know what you find difficult, like cutting your toe nails. I feel understood. The nurses are so good, they know when you need to talk, they know when you want to be left alone, or go for a walk or go to sleep. It’s all okay.

It’s all about you, just you. There’s not many times in your life when you get that. We’re all so busy and worried about others we don’t often get a chance to flag that we need help.

It’s important people know LOROS isn’t just a place to die. It’s about living as long as possible with as much fun and enjoyment and sparkle in your life as is out there.

It’s important people know LOROS isn’t just a place to die. It’s about living as long as possible with as much fun and enjoyment and sparkle in your life as is out there. Get every little bit of pleasure out of life as you can. This is the best medicine, being around people who care.”
